The Banpo Ruins, located in Banpo Village in eastern suburban Xian, is
one of the most important sites characteristic of the Neolithic Yangshao Culture
that existed 6,000-7,000 years ago. In 1958, the Banpo Museum, the first of its
kind in China, was built on the ruin premises. Today, the Banpo Ruins cover an
area of 50,000 square meters, consisting of a residential area, a pottery
workshop and a cemetery that have been unearthed. The Museum of the Banpo
Matriarchal Commune represents the life and work of the residents of more than
6,000 years ago. It combines prehistoric art, folklore and architecture of a
matriarchal community with entertainment and amusement.
