Ta'er, in Tibetan, means '10,000 Buddhas'. The Ta'er Lamasery is located in HuangZhong County, 26 kilometers from Xining, capital of Qinghai Province. It is the birthplace of Tson-kha Pa, founder of the Yellow Scet of Lamaism.

The lamasery was built in the Ming Dynasty with an area of 40 hectares. it is a large complex of dozens of halls and towers on a mountainside in both Tibetan and Han architectural styles. The lamasery is decorated with Butter sculptures, superimposed appliqués.

Every year, around the Lantern festival in February, a grand fair is held at the lamasery, drawing lamas from everywhere. The butter lanterns on display during the fair are famous across China. The temple also provides 1,000 mats for lamas to pray on. It is also well known for the frescos and embroidery in the prayer halls.
